7 Things to Do If You Truly Love Tea (According to Tea Lovers)

Is there anything quite as lovely as that first quiet moment of the morning when the house is still and the kettle starts to hum? It’s a sound that feels like a warm hug. In the UK, we don’t just drink tea to wake up; we drink it to celebrate, to commiserate, and to have a good old-fashioned “natter.”

But if you’ve moved past the standard “splash of milk and two sugars” and found yourself falling down the rabbit hole of loose leaves and brewing times, you know that being a tea lover is a bit of an identity. It’s about rituals, warmth, and conversations that make each cup special.

According to the UK Tea & Infusions Association, we brew an incredible 100 million cups of tea every single day. That’s a lot of shared moments over a steaming cup of tea. So we’ve been chatting with fellow tea enthusiasts and diving into community stories to find out what real tea lovers actually do to savour and share the cuppa.

Here are seven ways to take your tea game to the next level.

1. Watch the “Agony of the Leaves”

It sounds a bit dramatic, doesn’t it? But “The Agony of the Leaves” is actually a very beautiful, traditional term for the moment hot water hits your tea. It’s when the dried, curled leaves start to unfurl and “dance” in the water.

One tea lover on Reddit shared how the simple sight of watching tea leaves dance changed their morning, “This is the most enjoyable thing I watch every day!”.

Instead of walking away while your tea brews, try staying and watching. It’s a wonderful way to practice a bit of mindfulness before the day gets busy. If you’re looking to find some beautiful leaves to watch, you can explore some classic varieties here:

2. Create Your Own Tea Sanctuary

We’ve all been there, you are trying to enjoy a peaceful cuppa but all you can see is the piles of washing or the crumb-covered toaster. It doesn’t exactly scream “relaxation,” does it? Real tea lovers know that where you drink is just as important as what you drink.

Many people are now creating dedicated ‘tea nooks’ or ‘tea stations’ or even moving their ritual out into the garden to get away from the household clutter. As the playwright Arthur Wing Pinero once famously wrote, “Where there’s tea there’s hope.“ And hope is much easier to find in a beautiful, quiet space.

Imagine having a dedicated garden retreat where you can slip away for twenty minutes, surrounded by birdsong and fresh air. It’s about creating a “boundary” between your busy life and your tea time.

3. Experiment with “The Perfect Dunk”

We couldn’t talk about tea without mentioning biscuits! While the classic Digestive is the king of the biscuit tin for many, tea lovers often have very specific (and sometimes slightly odd) pairing habits. It’s all part of the fun.

One contributor to the r/tea community mentioned how they like to switch things up:

“What do you usually enjoy with your tea? For me, it depends on the tea. A bold black tea needs a biscuit, but a delicate floral tea is best enjoyed with just a small piece of dark chocolate or even some dried fruit.”

Whether you’re a “one-dunk-and-out” person or someone who likes a full Afternoon Tea spread with scones and jam, the goal is to make it an experience. If you’re planning a proper get-together, you can find everything you need at The English Tea Party store.

4. Try “Tea Journaling” (Yes, Really!)

It might sound a bit fancy, but keeping a little note of the teas you try can be a lovely hobby. When you start trying different flushes (the time of year the tea was picked) or teas from different countries, you’ll notice they all have their own “personality.”

Studies show that tea contains L-theanine, which helps the brain relax and focus. By journaling while you sip, you’re doubling down on that relaxation. You don’t have to write a novel, just a quick note like “smells like honey” or “perfect for a rainy Tuesday” is enough.

5. Don’t “Scold” Your Leaves

This expert tip every tea lover eventually learns: boiling water isn’t always the answer! If you pour bubbling, 100°C water onto delicate green tea, it can end up tasting bitter and “burnt.”

  • Green & White Tea: Try letting the kettle sit for a few minutes so the water cools to about 80°C.
  • Black & Herbal Tea: These love the heat, so go ahead and use boiling water.

A tea drinker on Reddit shared their lightbulb moment with temperature:

“I used to think I hated green tea. Turns out, I just hated burnt green tea. Once I dropped the temp to 80 degrees, it was like a completely different tea. It was sweet and fresh.”

6. Take a “Digital Detox” Steep

The three to five minutes it takes for a pot of tea to steep is the perfect amount of time for a break. In our world of constant scrolling and pings, those few minutes are a gift. Use them to put your phone in another room, look out the window, or just breathe.

Tea is the ultimate companion for slowing down. It’s one of the few things in life we can’t rush. If you take the tea bag out too early, it’s weak; if you leave it too long, it’s too strong. It forces us to wait, and savour the moment.

7. The Joy of the “Tea Gift”

If you truly love tea, you probably find yourself wanting to share that feeling with others. Gifting a beautiful tin of loose leaf or a curated tea set is like giving someone a “moment of peace” in a box.

In many cultures, serving tea is the ultimate sign of friendship and respect. It says, “I have time for you.” Whether you’re buying a treat for yourself or a friend, choosing the right blend is a wonderful way to connect.

The Final Steep

Being a tea lover isn’t about following strict rules; it’s about finding joy in the small, steaming details. Whether you’re watching the leaves unfurl in a glass pot, sipping away in your garden room, or debating the best biscuit for dunking, you’re part of a global community that values a slower, more thoughtful pace of life.

So, the next time the kettle whistles, don’t rush. Take your time, pick your favourite mug, and enjoy the ritual. You’ve earned it.
